It is the expression of the close bond I have with them. These sculptures represent bodies wrapped in bandages: anthropomorphic figurines, expressing human feelings only by the use of their body language. The idea of the bandages and the impossibility to show a facial expression or a hand gesture, is highly autobiographical. Our body ends to talk on our behalf… sometimes. Often my Mummies have no gender or no perfect proportions. They are just bodies. Nothing more than bodies with a soul. As most of the sculptures bandages, in the first years, were made of used bicycle inner tubes, people started to call them “Rubber Dolls”. That's because sometimes we are just too shy to talk, or too respecful to watch, or too scared to listen. These two sculptures represent a couple of friends: Jasmin and Andrea: characters in a book I'm writing. In my story they look complitely different... and nontheless they can talk, but in this sculpture version, they are forced to use alternative methods to communicate. Also living among the stars is alienating, but it gives Andromeda some happiness, because alienating itself form the alienation of the alien life gives Andromeda the opportunity to contemplate its own solitude and enjoy its own diversity. Biography - Artist Biography Sculptor, illustrator, poet, Pepél is an Italian artist based in Venice, specialised in recycled art and art meditation. Born Laura Finotto in 1981 in a small provincial town, Pepél found refuge in art during her childhood, as a way to find solace and courage in response to a traumatising and dysfunctional external environment. In 1999, on her 18th birthday, she enrolled at a meditation class. This practice became a daily routine that she soon included in her art process. In 2012, she officially became a professional mixed media artist, attracting since the very beginning a wide, heterogenous and international public, particulary attracted by her use of alternative materials and by her capability of including the customert’s precious belongings in her artworks, as well as by the emotional charge of her simple and minimal illustrations. In 2014 Pepél created her first “Peps’n’Doll” sculptures that, together with the characters of her drawings, made Pepél’s pieces of art recognisable and attributable to the artist herself, allowing her to collect critical success, awards, exhibitions and valuable international collaborations. In the following years, she gained recognition in the poetry field. This led to the publication of the illustrated book “El Mazzariol” and the inclusion of 10 of her poems in the contemporary Italian poets encyclopedia “I Poeti di Via Margutta”. The 2019 needed to be a year off. A break form the frenetic art life and a time for reflection and meditation after which Pepèl chosed to adopt a slower and more natural lifestyle. My art is a reflection of a perpetual physical and mental journey throughout World, meditation, music, human psyche and Life, in a constant research of peace and harmony. It is a medicine for the inevitable pain and suffering that comes with the Existence. Art is my refuge, my language, my outburst. It’s an equilibrium that I can find as much in the hubbub of the extreme music as in the smooth, silent flowing of a brush on the paper. My name is Pepél and my goal is giving new life to anything I meet along my path: objects, feelings, people. Art is Healing. My art is a way to be reborn.
